If you have your own place, whether you rent it or own it, it most likely has some imperfections that you’ve spent some time trying to hide. No matter your motivation for doing so — whether it’s to temporarily spruce up your place for guests coming over or to make yourself feel better about the household project you’ve been putting off for a while — there are many ways to deal with eyesores in your home. Read on for some handy tips on how to efficiently get rid of or disguise these eyesores so that you can enjoy your home to the fullest.

1. Hide TV cords, cables, and wires.

If your TV happens to be mounted on the wall, chances are that you’ve had some difficulty figuring out what to do with the cords, cables, and wires hanging down from it. To hide these unsightly cords, you may want to use some furniture and other decorative pieces to disguise them. For example, you could place a console or some sort of table in front of your mounted TV and stack some decorative pieces on top, such as some books, flower vases, picture frames … whatever your heart desires!

2. Put all of your electronics in a charging drawer.

If you own electronics, chances are that they also come with a lot of wires that get tangled and mixed up easily. And when you need to charge these electronics, all the wires lying around near your wall outlets can become a bit of an eyesore at times (not to mention a bit of a hazard). To combat this, you might want to designate a drawer of a table or desk you have at home as your “charging drawer.” There, you can place a power outlet and have a handy one-stop area to charge all of your electronics at once.

3. Disguise your thermostat with a picture or painting.

Sometimes, a lone thermostat on a blank wall can appear a bit out of place. To change that, consider hiding your thermostat with a picture or a painting. Simply find a decorative art piece you love and hang it over your thermostat; you can take it down whenever you need to change the temperature in your home or apartment. Another option is to hang the picture with hinges so that you can easily swing it open whenever you need to reach the thermostat.

4. Put drawers under the staircase (if you have stairs).

A smart way to clean up potential eyesores around your home and create more storage space is to install drawers beneath your staircase. Doing so may require you to invest in someone skilled in home construction, but the investment could certainly be worth it if it helps you stay organized and keeps your stuff in neat compartments rather than scattered around your home. You can put anything you want in the drawers beneath your stairs, depending on how large the drawers are.

4. Hide your trash can in a cabinet.

Arguably one of the biggest eyesores in any household is a trash can — especially if it’s overflowing with the smell and the sight of a week’s worth of trash. To cover this up, hide your trash can in a decorative cabinet or drawer of some sort so that it looks like it’s just blending in with the rest of your kitchen. If you don’t have the resources to do this, or your trash can doesn’t fit in your cabinets, you can also use a decorative basket of some sort to make your trash receptacle look at least a little more appealing.

6. Add some decorative blankets and throw pillows to spruce up your couch.

If you have a rather old couch in your home or apartment but can’t afford to get a completely new one, you might want to consider getting some blankets and throw pillows to brighten up its look. Having a variety of colors, patterns, and textures for these decorative blankets and pillows can certainly add a unique flair to your living space and even help cover up things you’d rather keep hidden — like stains from food and drink spills over the years. To switch out the kinds of blankets and pillows you use whenever you feel like it, keep a basket with extra ones nearby.

7. Make your own pillowcases.

To take things even further, if you have some old pillows lying around but can’t bring yourself to get rid of them, create your own pillowcases. This project gives you the chance to be resourceful and thrifty if you so desire. Simply purchase some fabrics from a craft store or even use an old T-shirt or scraps of material that you’ve found around the house. That way, you’ll be adding a bit of flair that comes straight from your own home.

There are many ways to make your household look more aesthetically appealing with just a few simple tricks. Don’t overthink it and just go with what you think looks right!
